Announced on compgeom.announce May 3, 1996:
CALL FOR PAPERS
Special Issue of the Journal Computer-Aided Design on
``Computational Geometry and Computer-Aided Design & Manufacturing''
Computer-Aided Design & Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) involves the design, prototyping,
manufacture, and inspection of complex geometric objects under computer
control. Computational Geometry (CG) is concerned with the design of efficient techniques
for the computer representation and manipulation of geometric objects such as polygons,
polyhedra, curves, and surfaces. These techniques have the potential to bring about
significant design and performance improvements in CAD/CAM and, conversely, CAD/CAM
provides a rich stream of interesting geometric problems that could stimulate further
research in CG. Indeed, in anticipation of this synergy, NSF sponsored a workshop on CG
and Manufacturing at the Courant Institute in April 1994 and ACM is sponsoring a
workshop on Applied Computational
Geometry in May 1996, which has Manufacturing as one of its main thrusts.
The purpose of this special issue is to further foster this nascent interaction
between CG and CAD/CAM. Papers are sought from researchers in both fields that address
this interaction by presenting applications of CG techniques to problems in CAD/CAM and by
identifying future directions for research. Papers that include experimental validation
of the underlying theory are especially desirable. Co-authorship across the two
disciplines is encouraged.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Manufacturing processes such as NC-machining, injection molding, casting, electrical
and chemical machining etc.
- Rapid Prototyping and layered manufacturing.
- Tolerancing and Metrology.
- Design of mechanisms and linkages.
- Part assembly and disassembly.
- Interpretation of engineering drawings.
- Geometric modeling related to manufacturing.
- Vision and robotics related to manufacturing.
- Process planning and control.
- Geometric software libraries for manufacturing.
Authors are requested to submit four (4) hardcopies of a complete manuscript by
November 30, 1996 to one of the guest editors:
Manuscripts should be prepared in a format that is consistent with the instructions
that appear in any recent issue of Computer-Aided Design. All manuscripts
will be refereed promptly, in accordance with the journal's refereeing policy. The
special issue is expected to be published by the end of 1997.
A PostScript version of this call for papers is also available.
