DIMACS, the Center for Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer
Science, a consortium of Rutgers and Princeton Universities and AT&T
Bell Laboratories and Bellcore, would like to receive suggestions for
future programs. All members of the community are encouraged to send
their suggestions. The suggestions can be short and informal and will
be referred to the DIMACS projects committee, which will come back for
more detailed information on those topics it feels are most
appropriate to pursue. Please send your comments and ideas to
projects@dimacs.rutgers.edu.

Programs for which we would like suggestions include special years,
workshops, and miniworkshops.

A "special year" refers to a focused and coordinated collection of
activities (including workshops, seminars, and visitor, postdoc, and
graduate student programs) that span a period of time, usually
somewhere between six months and two years. The focus of each special
year will be an area of discrete math / theoretical computer
science that satisfies most of the following criteria: it is
attractive to and contains problems appropriate for high quality
research mathematicians and computer scientists; it has strong
potential for applications in other areas of science, the mathematical
sciences, and industry; it has strong potential for introducing
researchers to problems that arise in other subject areas; it is ready
for rapid development and would benefit from increased attention by
researchers.

Previous special years at DIMACS have covered the topics Discrete and
Computational Geometry, Complexity Theory of Interactive Computing,
Graph Theory and Algorithms, Combinatorial Optimization, and Massively
Parallel Computing. We are currently running a special year in Logic
and Algorithms and are in the second year of our program on
Mathematical Support for Molecular Biology, a program which will
continue in 1996-97. Programs scheduled to commence in 1996-97 are a
Special Year in Networks and a Special Focus Program in Discrete
Probability (jointly run with the Institute for Advanced Study).

A workshop can go anywhere from two to five days and topics should be
consistent with the criteria for special years. We also run workshops
on topics of an educational nature, for example on some aspect of the
undergraduate curriculum, or aimed at high school teachers or
students. We also encourage activities that have both a research and
an educational component. A miniworkshop is usually a one day affair,
with a minimal budget, and sometimes scheduled with little lead time
because there is a special opportunity or especially promising topic.
