The Anna and Paul Erdös Post-Doctoral Fellowship

Dear Colleague,

Paul Erdös was associated with the mathematics department at the Technion since 1955 when he was appointed a "Permanent Visiting Professor". This position, which he held until his death, permitted him to come to the Technion whenever he wanted, for as long as he wished, and to be paid a regular salary during these visits. He came frequently and these visits were of great value to the department, and hopefully also to him.

In 1984 Paul Erdös was awarded the prestigious Wolf Prize. He donated most of the prize money to the Department of Mathematics at the Technion for the establishment of a memorial fund in the name of his mother Anna. The interest on this money is used to periodically award the Anna Erdös Post-Doctoral Fellowship. However the capital never has been sufficient to award this fellowship more than once every 7-8 years.

With Erdös' passing we have looked for a suitable way of commemorating his memory. We finally decided that it would be more than appropriate, considering his constant support and encouragement of young mathematicians, to continue and expand upon the project which he initiated. It is therefore our aim to establish an endowment fund in the name of Paul Erdös, the interest on which to be added to the interest from the Anna Erdös fund, so that the fellowship may be more frequently awarded. We hope and believe that Paul would have approved of these efforts.

If you would like to contribute to this project, please make a cheque payable to "Technion - Israel Institute of Technology", and put a note on the back of the cheque that it is for the Paul Erdös Fund. Our address for correspondence and contributions is:
