                              News from the

                    EUROPEAN SYMPOSIUM on ALGORITHMS

                                  (ESA)

Here are some items from the ESA Business Meeting held during the 4th Annual
European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA'96, sept 25-27, BARCELONA):

1. ESA'96: there were 124 submissions, and 40 papers were selected for the
(excellent) program. The proceedings are available as LNCS volume 1136.

2. ESA'97: the ESA'97 symposium will be held september 15-17, 1997 in GRAZ,
Austria. Program co-chairmen: Rainer E. Burkard and Gerhard Woeginger.

Preliminary ESA'97 information is already available on the Web at
	   http://fmatbhp1.tu-graz.ac.at/esa

3. ESA'98: by a clear majority vote of the ESA participants it was decided to
accept the proposal by G.Bilardi (Padova) and G. Italiano (Venice) to host
the ESA'98 symposium at the University of VENICE.

4. In a discussion about `the future of ESA' it was concluded that the ESA
Symposium is in very good shape scientifically and that it should continue
on its course of being the primary European meeting on discrete algorithms,
despite the competition of the ever-growing number of other conferences in
the algorithms-domain (in Europe and elsewhere).
The steering committee was requested to investigate whether the positioning
of ESA in mid-September is really optimal for the future and whether another
time-frame and/or perhaps a confederation with some other meeting might be
desirable, to guarantee the best conditions for the further development of
ESA. The steering committee is expected to report at the next business
   meeting, at ESA'97.

5. The ESA Steering Committee now consists of

	     Paul Spirakis (Patras)
	     Josep Diaz (Barcelona)
	     Gerhard Woeginger (Graz)
	     Kurt Mehlhorn (Saarbr\"ucken)
	     Branislav Rovan (Bratislava)

As my term on the committee ended, questions and issues for the ESA steering
committee should now be sent to Josep Diaz (diaz@goliat.upc.es) or to any
other member of the steering committee!

See you at the next ESA in Graz.............................................

Jan.
