Dear Colleagues,

Below is an announcement of tenured position(s) available at the University of Illinois beginning August 21, 1998.

Please note that combinatorics is one of the areas of preference. We are eager to identify outstanding candidates who would be interested in joining us. In the application process, note that the candidate need not arrange for letters of recommendation. We will solicit letters for the finalists based on the names provided by the candidate.

Our present faculty in or near combinatorics includes Zoltan Furedi, Paul Weichsel, Kequan Ding, Bruce Reznick, Douglas West, and Tibor Szabo (post-doc). We also have strong groups in geometry and number theory and close ties with theoreticians in Computer Science, who include C.L. Liu, Herbert Edelsbrunner, Ed Reingold, Pravin Vajdya, Lenny Pitt, Michael Loui, Donna Brown, Alex Vardy.

The department has a network of workstations, and the mathematics library is especially thorough. We have at present six thesis students in combinatorics and an active seminar. Our structure of graduate courses in combinatorics includes one introductory course and a rotation of four advanced courses. Further information is available at http://www.math.uiuc.edu/~west/uicomb.html and for the department as a whole at http://www.math.uiuc.edu/

This is an excellent environment for mathematical research. I encourage you to respond. You may write to me or contact the department more formally as described below.

Sincerely,
Douglas B. West

Department of Mathematics
Tenured Position

Applications are invited for one or more full time tenured faculty positions to commence August 21, 1998. Those faculty will be expected to pursue an outstanding research program, and teach graduate students as well as undergraduate students. The department will consider applicants in all fields of mathematics, but we intend to show preference in applied mathematics, differential equations, number theory, algebraic geometry, combinatorics, computational mathematics, and probability theory. Salary and teaching load are competitive.

Tenure applicants are expected to have a PhD and a documented record of leadership in research as well as of excellence in teaching. They should send a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a few selected reprints or preprints, and the names and addresses of three references to the address below. The department will solicit letters for the finalists for the tenured positions.

To insure full consideration, all materials should be received by October 3, 1997. We encourage use of the application cover sheet provided by the American Mathematical Society and the indication of the subject area using the AMS subject classification numbers. Applications from women and minority candidates are especially encouraged. The University of Illinois is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer.
