Dear CG Community,

We are fast approaching the meeting in Nice next month...

There are a couple items of business that need to be addressed by our community:
(please note the May 21 deadline for nominations (below))

1. Business Meeting Agenda Items:

Please forward to any of the steering committee members (mehlhorn@mpi-sb.mpg.de, emo@inf.ethz.ch, yap@cs.nyu.edu, edels@cs.uiuc.edu, jsbm@ams.sunysb.edu) your suggested items of discussion on:

  1. locations of upcoming SoCG (1998 is set for Minnesota)
  2. announcements of general interest
  3. suggestions/discussion topics

Do this as soon as possible!

2. Election of New Steering Committee Members:

Some of us (Kurt, Herbert, and Joe) had originally volunteered to take a 2-year term (vs. the 3-year term we were originally voted into), in the hopes that we could set up a ``staggering'' of the terms, in order to insure continuity. However, since it is now more than 2 years later, we propose to hold new elections:

We propose to hold a general election for 5 new steering committee members, each to serve for a 2-year term (with next elections occurring before SoCG'99).

We propose to open nominations immediately, in hopes that the election process can take place between now and the meeting in Nice.

To effect this, we propose that any member of the community can nominate a candidate member by sending email to Joe Mitchell (jsbm@ams.sunysb.edu), who, as an out-going committee member, will serve to compile a list of nominees.

Deadline for nominations: Wednesday, May 21, 11:59pm (New York time)

Each nominee should be contacted and allowed to accept/reject nomination prior to the list of candidates being announced. This can be done either by the nominator, prior to making the nomination, or will be done by the collector of nominations (Joe Mitchell) prior to announcing the list of candidates.

Further, nominees who accept candidacy are invited to prepare a short ``position statement'', to be published with their name on the candidate list. (This is entirely optional.)

We propose that there be a limit of 2 consecutive terms for any member of the committee. (Thus, in particular, if one of the current members is nominated and accepts nomination, he can run for a second term.) Once a person has ``sat out'' for one term, she/he is eligible to run again for membership.

The plan, then is that on or about Friday, May 23, a list of candidates will be posted to compgeom-announce, and each member of the community will be asked to vote for 5 individuals from the list. The 5 people receiving the most votes by the close of elections, Friday, May 30, will form the new steering committee and decide among themselves on election of officers, etc. The new steering committee members will be invited to join the outgoing steering committee in conducting this year's business meeting in Nice.

Joe Mitchell has volunteered to serve as ``secretary'' for this election; as such, he has respectfully declined nomination for a second term at this time.

All of us on the steering committee remain committed to serving the field and look forward to assisting in any way possible with the transition to a new committee. In particular, we will be available for advising the new committee members.

Respectfully,

Your steering committee:

Herbert, Kurt, Joe, Emo, and Chee
