One-Dimensional Computational Topology
About
Homeworks are released roughly every other week, to give you an opportunity to play with the course material. Homework problems vary in difficulty from straightforward sanity-checking exercises to open research problems.
- *Small stars indicate problems that I don't know how to solve; this does not necessarily indicate that the problem is open, difficult, or interesting.
- ★Larger stars indicate problems that I know are open. A publishable solution to any open problem is worth an automatic A+ in the course. Even if you publish the solution years after the course is over, I will retroactively change your course grade. Yes, I have done this.
I do not expect complete solutions from every student for every problem, or even every non-starred problem, but please make a good faith effort.
I do not plan to write up official solutions, but I will distribute some model student solutions (assuming the authors agree).
Submission
Homework solutions can be submitted via Gradescope, because I am fond of losing both important emails and important pieces of paper.
- The Gradescope self-enrollment code is MRWX3N.
- You can sign up using any name and email address you like, but please use a consistent identity in all homework submissions.
- If you are using anything other than your real name and illinois.edu email address, please fill out this form so I know who you are.
- Groups of up to three students can submit joint solutions, just like CS 374 and CS 473. Of course, you're welcome to work in larger groups, and to use any resources at your disposal, but please cite any resource that you use.
Feedback
Each (non-starred) homework problem will be "graded" on a simple four-point scale:
- Missing or not even wrong
- Good-faith effort but not correct
- Partial solution with significant gaps
- Good solution with a few minor issues
- Model solution
Again, these scores are meant to be useful feedback to help you better understand the course material. Course grades are primarily based on the end-of-semester project.
